Commuting: ProductiveMuslim style! ;)

written
Commuting: ProductiveMuslim style! ;)

This post is about commuting ProductiveMuslim style! ;) How you can make the most of those long hours on the road so that they truly add value to your life (and afterlife) instead of subtracting from it.

Now this all depends on which commuting vehicle you’re using (and trust me, I’ve used them all). Below is a breakdown of what you can do in each type of commuting vehicle. But before we get into that, a few prerequisites:

1. When you leave your house, remember the dua for leaving the house

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillahi tawakkaltu allah lah la hawla wala kuwata ila billa
‘In the name of Allaah, I place my trust in Allaah, and there is no might nor power except with Allaah.’
Allahumma innee a’uoozubika an adhilla auw adhalla auw azilla auw uzalla auw auw uzhlama auw ajhala auw yujhala ‘alaiyya
‘O Allaah, I take refuge with You lest I should stray or be led astray, or slip or be tripped, or oppress or be oppressed, or behave foolishly or be treated foolishly.’

2. Remember the dua for riding/mounting a vehicle:

بِسْمِ اللّهِ ، الْحَمْد’ للّهِ ، سُبْحانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
Bismillah. Alhamdulilah. SubhanAll-ladhi, sakh-khara lana, haatha, wa-ma kunna lahu mukrineen. Wa inna ila Rubbina lamunqalibuun.
‘In the name of Allaah and all praise if for Allaah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (Transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord if our final destiny.’

3. Invest in a good MP3 player

Either an MP3 player with A-B functionality or an iPod Touch/iPhone with a Quran Application installed (here’s a guide on how to “Islamize your iPod Touch/iPhone”)
With the above sorted, here are some ProductiveMuslim to-do’s whilst commuting in each vehicle:

Bike:

Things you can do while riding your bike:
1. Memorize the Quran:
Using your MP3 player with A-B Functionality you can specify where your MP3 player should start on a track, and where it should end, then loop it. This means you can choose a Quran track and specify from which verse the recitation should begin and which verse it should stop at, then repeat these verses as many times as you want. The result: memorizing a whole set of new verses!
Next day move on to the next set of verses and repeat the process as you cycle along. (For this to truly work, I suggest you memorize the verses at home first before you leave your house, ideally after Fajr Salah, and then listen to them on your way to work and back). The iPod Touch/iPhone can be used in a similar way using the excellent iQuran Pro software.  (here’s a guide on how to “Islamize your iPod Touch/iPhone“)
2. Contemplate on Allah’s creation:
The most enjoyable part for me when riding a bike is contemplating on Allah’s creation: the heavens, the earth, the mountains, and the scenery that surrounds us truly reminds me of the verse:
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding”. (3:190)
To contemplate most effectively, I suggest you use a map and leave early for work so that you can try a different route each day or get a chance to cycle around your favorite park at least once before you go to work. Breathing in the fresh air and entertaining your eyes with Nature is an absolute joy that will set your mood straight for the rest of the day.
3. Remember Allah:
Connected to the above. Simply saying “SubhanaAllah, Al-Hamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar” or any other supplication or remembrance is a truly productive and rewarding way of spending your commute. It connects you to the Hereafter, makes you focus on the “bigger” picture beyond this life and reminds you of who you’re worshipping. A great way to start or end your day!
4. Exercise:
Riding a bike is a natural exercise, so not only are you commuting but you’re also exercising! My only advice here is to make sure your work place has a shower room (and of course don’t forget to pack a change of clothes!)

Car:

If you’re driving a car (you can do all of the above (except the exercise part) + the following:
AudioBooks/Lectures/Courses/Podcasts:
I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of learning through listening with my iPod Touch connected to my car’s radio device. I can listen to any audiobook, lectures, Islamic MP3 courses, or Podcasts I download to my iPod. I completed a 2 hour life coaching course, a marketing course (36 CDs), an Islamic seerah course (32 CDs), and 100s of hours of other talks through doing so.
Now most people do the above one way or another, BUT here are some advanced tips to really make the most of ALL your audio files:
  1. Have a structured course planned out – so you know exactly what you’re listening to and when, and can build on your knowledge instead of starting on something then changing it to something else… then coming back to where you started!
  2. If you truly want to make the most of what you listened to, try taking notes as you wait in busy traffic OR when you get home. That will help reinforce what you learnt, and you will be more likely to use it inshaAllah.

Trains/Bus/Plane/ Personal Chauffeur:

Again, you can do all of the above + the following:
1. Video Podcasts:
Watch Video Podcasts/Courses through your iPod Touch/iPhone or any other MP4technology that displays video on small screens. Again, you can download these courses (some of which are free) to your laptop then sync with your devices.
2. Read Books/Study:
Spend a weekend in a bookstore and purchase a set of beneficial books to read on your daily commute. Nothing like lifelong learning :). Again, make sure the books are part of a “plan”, i.e. let’s say you’re interested in marketing this week, then all your audio files for the car rides and the books you read should relate to that subject.
3. Reply to your e-mails offline:
If you carry your laptop with you, you may find it very useful (especially on trains/planes) to catch up on e-mails and prepare draft replies to them. For those of you who check your e-mails online, I highly suggest you set up your laptop so that it downloads ALL your e-mails from your different accounts to one e-mail client, e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird and so on. That way, you don’t need internet connection to check your e-mail, the e-mails are downloaded when you’re connected to the internet, and you can read them/ and prepare draft replies at your convenience.
4. Set Agendas:
I learnt this from David Allen’s Productivity System “Getting Things Done”: Prepare an agenda for every person you’re going to meet. Isn’t it annoying when you meet somebody that you had so much to tell or ask of, but can only remember 2 things from that list?! Writing down ‘an agenda’ for everyone you’re going to meet or need to see is a helpful and productive tip to make the most of that meeting. So if you’re sitting in your train or on the plane… write out those agendas! If you’re traveling for a meeting and no agenda has been set, use the time you have to write an agenda. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, a ‘short list’ will do.
5. Phone Calls/SMS:
Yup, I’m that annoying person who never stops talking on the phone from the moment the train/bus starts moving till the end. OK, I’m not. I actually hate those people. But a train ride/bus ride is prime time for a quick catch up call/SMS. Those who know me, know that I cannot sit down and speak over the phone and I just love walking and talking… so I normally use the time going to and fro from train stations, or up and down the terminal to really get most of the phones calls out of the way. (p.s. By the way, that’s a life coaching tip there: NEVER sit down when talking over the phone, especially if you need to convince the person on the other end of the line of something or you’ll be asked difficult questions. I guess that’s where ‘thinking on your feet’ comes from).
6. Think & contemplate – brainstorm ideas/Journal:
Whilst contemplating on Allah’s creation (see above) thoughts and ideas enter (& leave) my mind! I need to capture them. Hence, with my trusted Moleskine Folio Journal, I write down ALL the ideas in the form of mindmaps, journal entries, pictures, charts etc… Most of my favourite posts on ProductiveMuslim were born in those precious me-time moments on the train/bus/plane with dear old Moleskine ;) They provide a very useful platform for developing ideas that just got captured during my journey.
You can now see why I love commuting! No matter which vehicle you put me in, with the proper planning and right tools, my daily commute becomes a true asset to my daily life instead of a time-waster in traffic :)

Analyze your time — Your key to productivity

Analyze your time – Your key to productivityAn old friend of mine once said to me, “There’s a myth that’s going around these days, the myth says: If you can manage your time, you can do anything!”. Four years from hearing this advice, I don’t believe it’s a myth anymore.
We all hear about time management and it’s importance, and people shout at us from time to time that we should time manage properly, but rarely do we hear a concise methodology of how to time manage!
In order to understand how to time manage, you firstly need to understand what time management is about. Time management is not about managing your time, because technically, you cannot manage something you have no control over! (Can you stop, start time?!) – Time management is simply managing yourself in a way that makes use of the time sphere we’re in. So how exactly do we that?
Peter Drucker, author of the famous book “The Effective Executive” (Highly recommended reading)), recommends three steps to managing your time, and he actually calls the chapter that deals with this: “Know thy time”:
  1. Analyze your time.
  2. Cut back unproductive demands.
  3. Aim to complete tasks in large chunks of time.
So let’s get into more details of how to follow the above three steps (adding the usual ProductiveMuslim Islamic twist to it ;)).

Analyze your time:

Record your time over a course of at least a week. I’ll be honest here, it’ll take a strong stomach to realise how much time we waste in a course of a week. But being truthful to oneself is the first step to remedy. There are 2 ways to record your time:
  1. Keep a diary with you recording what you do each hour
  2. Ask your friend/flat-mate/spouse to analyze your time, (as we tend to be nice to ourselves when we record our own time, and end up ‘cheating’)

Cut back unproductive demands:

Hopefully, after recording our time, a sad realization would dawn upon us, and that is, there’s a lot we can cut down from. e.g. do we really need to spend that hour in the cafe in the morning, or is it just better to make some coffee at home and read e-mails at the same time? Do we really need to spend 2 hour everyday just flicking through TV channels or internet sites or can we cut down from that time? (Note: please please don’t cut back from time for Allah! Some people in order to ‘save’ time, will not go to the mosque to pray for example, that’s not an unproductive demand to cut down on, that’s an essential demand which we better keep, so please don’t touch the religious stuff, we’re already guilty of not giving enough time to them, let’s not use this excuse to make it worse!

Aim to complete tasks in large chunks of time:

Isn’t it annoying when you are working on something so hard and you got really into it (sometimes called being in ‘The Zone’) to be interrupted by a phone call or an e-mail alert or text?! This third tip basically says that you should try to block time off in large chunks of time, (some people suggest that 90 minutes is the maximum they can concentrate at one time, but that’s 90 minutes of uninterrupted time). This technique will help you achieve much more by doing less, simply because you’re more focused at one task at a time. Doing one task in one hour, will end up taking you 4 hours if you are interrupted every 10-15 minutes. To help you block your time, refer to our Daily Taskinator.
Well,  hope this gives you a better understanding of how to turn the myth of time management into reality.

7 Daily Spiritual Productive Habits to Develop

7 Daily Spiritual Productive Habits to DevelopYou should aim to develop the following 7 Spiritually Productive activities into habits so that you can hopefully continue benefitting from them throughout your life. I consider these activities as the spiritual ‘bread and butter’ of any ProductiveMuslim. To develop them as habits is the essence of embarking on your journey towards the love of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and constantly increasing in your eman, inshaAllah:

1) Pray the Sunnah Prayers before and/or after Prayer:

I know it’s easier to just pray the obligatory prayers and rush out of the mosque! However, when we realise the rewards we’re missing from not praying these Sunnah prayers we won’t leave them. Over the years I have learnt there’s only ONE way of getting yourself to pray these Sunnah prayers constantly: Get into the habit of praying them! They’ll soon become part and parcel of your Salah and your Salah will feel incomplete without performing these acts.

2) Remembrance of Allah after Salah:

Again, it’s easy to rush out after Salah due to our busy lives, though if we are honest, how long does it take to recite the supplications after Salah? (The Answer: 5-7 minutes!). If you’re not sure what I’m referring to, you may find the supplications at MakeDua.com. Nowadays you’ll find pocket notebooks/or phone applications with these supplications. Get into the habit of reciting them daily after each Salah to enrich your Salah experience.

3) Morning/Evening Remembrance of Allah:

Step 2 is also included in this habit. There exists a beautiful set of duas/remembrances from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which he used to say before sunrise and after sunset. They are true stress relievers and energy boosters which never fail to make my days and evenings feel blessed. [You can find the duas at MakeDua.com]

4) Night Prayer:

Hamdulillah, during Ramadan we have the wonderful Taraweeh prayers to attend. However, outside of Ramadan there are many opportunities to still obtain the reward of the night prayer. If you’re new to night prayer or you don’t pray it constantly during the year, make sure you try to attend prayers each and every night in congregation at the mosque (particularly brothers), and give yourself a ‘no-excuse’ policy. Develop a habit of praying Tahajjud and continuing to pray them for an entire 30 days; this will set you on better footing to continue with the Night Prayer for the rest of the year inshaAllah.

5) Duha Prayer:

Here’s a Productive Muslim’s top secret to a productive day: 2 rak’ahs known as the Duha prayer which you may pray at anytime after sunrise till before the sun reaches it’s zenith (around 30 minutes before Dhuhr). The reward of this prayer is similar to giving charity on behalf of every bone in your body, and the energy and buzz you feel during the day is amazing.

6) Supplications before you Sleep:

You’ve just had a long day and you’re super tired. You climb into bed and you want to hit the sack… but wait! Before you do, can you give yourself just 10 more minutes to recite the supplications before sleeping? That’s all. Try them and find yourself experiencing the most beautiful sleep ever and waking up for Fajr easily, inshaAllah. For more information on waking up for fajr, constantly, everyday, without fail Read How to Wake up for Fajr.

7) Reciting one hour of Quran each day:

Notice: I said here recite one hour of Quran each day and not one juz’ or one Surah. The amount of Quran you read is not as important as the quality of your understanding. If you spend one hour reciting one verse but understand it fully, that’s more important and beneficial then reciting lots of Quran at break-neck speed yet not understanding a word.
So there you go, 7 spiritually productive habits you can develop throughout the year starting from TODAY!

MY UUM LIFE STORY 2012-2014

FOR HIGH QUALITY VIDEO:

I hear the flowers gonna crying loud
The breeze is sounding sad
Oh no!
Tell me when the breeze would calm
So cold and and empty side
Lost the way long time ago
Did we really turn that blind
We don't see that we keep hurting each other
No, all we do we just fight
Now we share the same bright sun
The same round moon
Why don't we share the same love?
Tell me why not?
Life is shorter than most they thought
Hold my hand,
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand,
Turn around and see what you left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit in me and you
Form another chance
And let's pray for the beautiful world
The beautiful world I share with you

Children seem like they've lost their smile
On their new bloody playgrounds
Oh no!
How could we ignore?
Heart breaking crying sounds
And we still going on
Like nobody really cares
And we just stop feeling all the pain
Because like it's a daily basic affair
Now we share the same bright sun
The same round moon
Why dont we share the same love?
Tell me why not?
Life is shorter than most they thought
Hold my hand,
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand,
Turn around and see what you left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit in me and you
Form another chance
And let's pray for the beautiful world
The beautiful world I share with you
No matter how far I'll might be
I'm always gonna be your neighbour
It's only one small planet were to be
So I'm always gonna be your neighbour
We can't hide, we can't deny
That we always gonna be neighbours
Your neighbour
My neighbour
Were neighbours
So hold my hand,
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand,
Turn around and see what you left behind..
Hold my hand,
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand,
Turn around and see what you left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We can save the good spirit in me and you
Form another chance
And let's pray for the beautiful world
The beautiful world I share with you

About UUM

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), which was officially established on 16 February 1984, is the sixth Malaysian public university. It is the only university that was set up to specialise solely in management education from the very beginning of its establishment.
The planning of the construction of this sixth university began in August 1983 when the Ministry of Education Malaysia began to give form, in earnest, to the idea of setting up this university. On 19th October 1983, the Cabinet gave its official approval for this project in Kedah. At that time, the project was called “The Sixth University Project”. Several months later, the temporary office of the sixth university, officially named Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), was officially opened on 15th February 1984 in Jitra.

Four months after its official opening, the UUM office was relocated to its provisional campus – the Darul Aman Campus – in Jitra, in June 1984, when the first phase of the project had been completed. The relocation was carried out so as to be able to usher in the very first batch of students for the academic year which commenced in early June 1984. The Darul Aman Campus was on a 62-acre tract of land in Bandar Darulaman. It was 18 kms north of Alor Setar and 4.8 kms from Jitra.
new campus2
In the meanwhile, the planning of a permanent campus for the university had already begun. This permanent campus was to be built on an area of 1,061 hectares in Sintok (in the district of Kubang Pasu), situated about 48 kms north of Alor Setar and 10 kms east of Changlun, a small town along the North-South Highway, near the Malaysia-Thai border.
The permanent UUM campus, referred to as the Sintok Campus, commenced operations on 15 September 1990. Situated in a former tin mining area, it is ensconced in a valley of lush tropical forests, embraced by blue hills, and watered by two rivers that flow along the middle of the campus. The rivers, Sungai Sintok and Sungai Badak, complete the scenic beauty of the natural environment, affording a myriad vistas of verdant splendour.
new campus3
The MYR580 million Sintok Campus was officially opened on 17 February 2004 by the Royal Chancellor, His Royal Highness Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah. The main buildings of the campus are the Sultanah Bahiyah Library, the Chancellery, the Sultan Badlishah Mosque, the Mu’adzam Shah Hall, the Tan Sri Othman Hall, the Sports Complex, the Varsity Mall, the Budi Siswa building, the Convention Complex, and the buildings that house the various departments of the Academic Colleges.
As a campus situated far from the madding crowd, UUM has ensured that its students do not want for adequate accommodation. At present, UUM has 15 Student Residential Halls (SRH), which, all together, house 20,000 students. The SRHs are named after Malaysian companies, institutions, and organisations of repute, namely MAS, TENAGA NASIONAL, TRADEWINDS, PETRONAS, EON, MISC, SIME DARBY, BSN, TM, PROTON, MAYBANK, YAYASAN ALBUKHARY, BANK MUAMALAT, BANK RAKYAT, and SME BANK.
Apart from these, UUM also has comfortable accommodation available for visitors at the University Inn and the EDC-UUM Hotel. Mindful of the welfare and need for accommodation among its personnel, the University has built about 600 housing units of various types for a sizeable portion of its workforce.
UUM has evolved into an open campus where outsiders and tourists are allowed the freedom to visit and utilise the various amenities within it. An area encompassing 107 hectares of forest has been developed into various facilities both to attract tourists to the northern region and to satisfy the recreational needs of the members of the campus community. Among these facilities are a picnic area, a nine-hole golf course, a go-kart circuit, a shooting and archery range, an equestrian site, and many others that are fast gaining popularity among tourists and the members of the campus community alike.
In January 2008, a restructuring of the university academic system was undertaken with the express purpose of preparing a strong structure that would enable the increase in the number of postgraduate students and the hoisting of the UUM flag in the international academic arena. The university sees the need to be global in practice and content since the knowledge it generates and purveys transcends and extends far beyond the borders of Malaysia. In this restructuring exercise, 13 faculties were merged and streamed into 3 main Academic Colleges, namely UUM COB (UUM College of Business), UUM CAS (UUM College of Arts and Sciences), and UUM COLGIS (UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies).
new campus5
This step is in line with the imperative articulated in the statements of both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Higher Education that underscored the need to increase the number of postgraduate students in the country to 100,000 by 2010. This main strategy is embedded in The National Higher Education Strategic Plan 2007-2010.
To emblazon the name of UUM in the annals of academic excellence as an Eminent Management University and as a Research University in the Social Sciences, a UUM Transformation Plan was launched by the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, in conjunction with his 2011 New Year’s Message on 1st January 2011 at the Mua’adzam Shah Hall.
The UUM Transformation Plan, which is essentially a roadmap for the future pursuits and endeavours of UUM, is divided into two phases. Phase One, which is from 2011 till 2015, is focused on unequivocally placing UUM on the local academic map in a systematic and planned manner. During this period, greater emphasis will be given to ensuring the successful achievement of the objectives of the First Phase while, at the same time, being mindful of the imperatives of the Second Phase of the Transformation Plan, which will be from 2016 till 2020.

I want a righteous spouse but…

-related” statuses, comments and articles get maximum number of on the  social networking sites these days, like Facebook, Twitter, Google plus and others.
Maybe this is because everyone wants to take out their frustrations, share their observations and their acceptance or rejection on this universally acknowledged and interesting topic. In this battle, I have seen some people becoming so sentimental that they vomit out their own personal encounters, love affairs, and ever- lasting crushes along with potential parties’ names in public!
Indeed, marriage is a very vast and an extremely crucial subject, which can be seen from both the aspects: aspect of seriousness and aspect of fun. It totally depends on the individual’s age, maturity and attitude towards life.
“I want a righteous but …”, is a common phase  in the lives of the practicing Muslim youth. This dilemma is something we hear all around us in our religious circles & social gatherings.
Where, on one hand, all the religiously inclined men know and even understand the most famous hadith:
“A woman is married for four reasons: her wealth, her nobility, her beauty and her piety. Choose the pious one and be successful.” (Bukharee)
but very few are actually willing to act on it.
Some of my practicing friends are waiting to bump into some sort of Cinderella in abaya. This made me realize no matter how religious men look, very less people are actually willing to sacrifice when it comes to beauty and age, though they might sacrifice on piety, wealth and nobility.
This trend explicitly show us the true version of inner-us . All of us hear and talk about all this haadith all the time, but do we really mean it? Similarly, rejections are being made under the labels of “kuff” (compatibility), but the real reason for rejection is something else. Or even if it is kuff, what really constitutes (Kuff) equivalency in our eyes, this is a matter of debate.
Various scholars have done their own Ijtihad as to what factors are involved when it comes to Kuff. There are variety of opinions, but the strongest and the most sound opinion – and the one used by  Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen – is that Kuff is in reference to religious commitment only.  [Read more : http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/84306]
The mentality of the female gender in our society is no different; they too do the same. Though they might hold graduation in fiqh, maintain proper hijab and say along with their parents , “we want a righteous spouse…” very few are bold enough to act on what is being said.  It is evident that when someone from the low class family (but very pious) approaches them, suddenly many more things get added up in their list. They too know the famous hadith (by heart!):
“If a man whose practice of deen (religion) satisfies you, asks for your in marriage, you should marry them; otherwise, there’ll be corruption on earth.”(at-Tirmidhee)
but they seldom act upon it.
Women prefer to marry guys from the First World countries with multiple high degrees, a Ferrari and possessing a great amount of bank balance. Is it always a bad thing? No. But if it makes you turn away from multiple good proposals and if it is your only criteria and your first priority, then yes, you might have a . Only when the rejecters fail to find their perfect package, they regret rejecting the earlier ones who had proposed them modestly through their parents.
Musa (alayhis salam) would have never married the daughter of the man who gave him shelter, if his father in-law’s conditions were based on material possession like today. At that time, he had no club memberships, money, cars or other luxurious items, he wasn’t even given Prophet hood yet! He was a modest man and a righteous spouse. That was all he had.  But for the wise, that’s the true wealth, the real criteria.
When it comes to delayed marriages and marriage-related sufferings, many a times, the fault lies within us; our -world attitude and high standards.
When it comes to delayed marriages and marriage-related sufferings, many a times, the fault lies within us; our fantasy-world attitude and high standards. The truth is that is still somewhere in our minds and hearts. It seems not to go away despite the fact that we hear and know all these sayings and despite the fact we know the stories of all the companions and their criteria for picking up spouses.
Ask yourself, if today, a proposal comes your way, which looks religiously promising but, perhaps, struggling in worldly affairs, would you accept or walk away? It is all a matter of priorities.

Loving and respecting parents in Islam

PARENTS IN ISLAM

I begin with the name of Allah the most merciful and the most kind, peace and
blessing be upon beloved Prophet (S.A.W) All praise is for Allah.
In Sura Al Ahqaf Allah(S.T) the most High has said:

"And we have commanded
man to do good to his parents. His mother bore him with great hardship and
brought him forth in great pain. And the bearing and weaning are in thirty
months until when he attains full strength and reached forty years, he said: O
my lord! Inspire me that I may keep offering thanks for His favour which you
bestowed on me and on my parents (and grant me strength) that I may do good deeds those of which you approve and make my offspring righteous for me. Truly I turn to you in repentance and surely I am of those who submits to your commandments in all humanity." (SURAH  AL-AHQAF 46: 15)

MUSLIM BELIEF ABOUT HIS PARENTS

A Muslim must believe that his real originator or creator(Al-Khaliq) is Allah
(S.W.T) the most High but in this world, parents are the external cause of the existence of children. Allah(S.W.T) the most High is the real sustainer and cherisher of all of us but parents are gifted by Allah(S.W.T) to sustain and cherish their children with love and care. In other words parents of a child represent the Lordship of Allah(S.W.T) the most High.

OUR OBLIGATIONS TO PARENTS

In this verse of Sura Al-Ahqaf human being is commanded to treat his parents in every possible good way and manner by which he can achieve their pleasure and nearness. One who has true faith in the teachings of Islam must prove his faith by his practical behaviour towards his parents.

HONOUR OF OUR MOTHER

It is the great blessing of Allah(S.T) on all mothers that Allah(S.W.T) the most High has mentioned them in the Holy Quran to let us know and believe that we must not neglect our obligations towards her. In Hadith the order of serving the mother is given thrice. In the above mentioned verse too the mother is mentioned thrice first in the words

(A) WALIDAIHI IHSANA (to do good to his parents and fathers both)

(B) HAMALATHU UMMUHU (his mother bore him)

© WADAATHU (delivered him)

When a Sahabi(companion) enquired "O Apostle of Allah! (S.T) who is the most (rightful) for my good association? He (Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: "Your Mother." Then the person asked who is next, He (Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: "Your Mother" the Sahabi said who is next, The prophet of Allah (Sall AllahuAlaihi Wassallam) said: "Your Mother" the sahabi enquired who is next? The messenger of Allah(Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam) said "your Father"(agreed upon). In another Hadith it is mentioned:

"Then your mother, then your mother, then your mother and then your father and then the nearest relatives."

SEEK YOUR SALVATION BY GOOD BEHAVIOUR TO YOUR PARENTS

Being grateful to your parents makes you grateful to Allah
(S.W.T) and ungratefulness to them is ungratefulness to Allah(S.W.T) . One who does not prove to be thankful to the parents, he is lacking thankfulness to Allah(S.W.T) . Allah(S.W.T) said:

"Be grateful to me and to both your parents (SURAH Luqman 31:14)
one who showers gratefulness to his parents proved by good deeds and behaviour is blessed with Jannah(paradise), and the most unfortunate one is one who does not seek salvation by the true Khidmat shown by kindness in words and deeds."

The (beloved) Messenger of Allah(SallAllahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: "May he be humbled(looses his honour) May he be humbled May he be humbled: It was
said: who? O Messenger of Allah(Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam) the one who
finds parents in their old age either one of them or both of them and yet does not enter paradise" (Sahih Muslim)

JUDGE YOUR BEHAVIOUR TO YOUR PARENTS IN THE LIGHT OF
DIVINE TEACHINGS

Allah (S.T) said: "Your Lord has commanded that you must not worship non but Him alone and do good to your(both) parents. If either of both of them reach oldage in your life time say not even UFF(Fie) to them say not to them a word ofdisrespect nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour." (Sura Al_Isra Verse 23).

LOWER YOURSELF TO OLD PARENTS

Every human being having reached old age needs more service and care. The society must not ignore the rights of senior members of the community. Allah(S.T) said: "And lower to them shoulders with humility and meekness and say my Lord have mercy upon them(both) as they brought me up when I was little." When we were weak and in need our parents did hard labour in nourishing and rearing us. They have performed numerous sacrifices for our comfort and welfare. They were the main source of our safety from a number of difficulties. As Allah(S.T) has mentioned we must sincerely ponder over the many hardships, which were taken by our parents for our comfort.

CARING FOR EACH OTHERS PARENTS

Abdullah ibn Umar(may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah(Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: "A mans rebuking his parents is of the major sins. They (Sahaba) enquired; 'O (beloved) messenger of Allah(SallAllahuAlaihi Wassallam) does any man rebuke his own parents. He(SallAllahu AlaihiWassallam) said Yes he who chides the father of a man who chides his father in return and he who chides the mother of a man who chides his mother(in return).

DOOR OF PARADISE

Our duties to parents are resembled with the gates of paradise by the beloved Messenger of Allah (Sall Allahu Alaihi Wassallam). He(SallAllahu Alaihi
Wassallam) said: "Father or a parent is the best of the gate of paradise. So if you like, guard the gate or destroy it." Narrated by Imam Tirmizi and Ibn Maja

OUTLINE

Doing good to parents in everyway
Obeying them without demur in everything good
Behaving respectfully towards them
Maintaining attitude of thankfulness towards them
Caring for them with mercy, with special regard for the mother
Kindness to both parents is commanded by Allah (S.W.T) in the Holy Quran as
mentioned in the following verse: "We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents:
In pain did his mother bear him and in pain did she give birth. The carrying of the child to his weaning is a period of thirty months. At length when he reaches the age of full length and attains forty years, he says, 'O my Lord!
Grant me that I may be grateful for thy favour, which thou hast bestowed upon me and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as thou magest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to thee and truly do I bow (to thee) in Islam' such are they from who we shall accept the best of their deeds and pass by their ill deeds; (they shall) be among the companions of the Gardens a promise of truth, which was made to them (in this life)" (Al Quran XLVI 15,16)

OUR PARENTS HAPPINESS AND PLEASURE IS THE GREAT SOURCE OF

ALLAH'S MERCY FOR US

The Prophet (S.A.W) of Allah said: "The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the father, and the displeasure of the Lord is in the displeasure of the father"
(Tirmidhi reported by Abdullah Ibn Amr).

The prayers of our parents for us are also a great source of Allah's (S.W.T) blessing for us in this worldly life, as the Prophet of Allah said: "Nothing but supplication can annul predestination and nothing but obedience (kindness to them) to the parents can prolong life. A man is deprived of his provision for his sins he commits." (Ibn Maja reported by Thauban ).

AN INTERESTING STORY IN THE HADITH.

Ibn Omar reported that the (beloved) Prophet (S.A.W) said: "While three men were walking (travelling) the rain overtook them. Then they entered the cave of the mountain. While they were in the cave a huge rock of the mountain then fell down over the mouth of their cave and completely shut them in. In this difficult time there was no other obvious material source of rescue. They said to one another "let us recall the good deeds, which we did sincerely for Allah (S.W.T). Make dua (supplication) to Allah (S.W.T)" by mentioning those good deeds as a source of acceptance that He (S.W.T) may rescue us. So one of them mentioned one of his special deeds to Allah (S.W.T) by saying: "O Allah (S.W.T) I had old and weak

parents and young children for whom I used to graze sheep. Whenever I went to them at night, I took milk and gave it first to my parents to drink before my children. One day I could not return home till it was evening. Then I found them (parents - mum and dad) had fallen asleep. I had came to them with milk as I used to do (and did not disturb their sleep) but I remained standing near their heads in the state of not liking to begin dinner with children before them (mum and dad), while the children were crying at my feet. This affair of theirs and mine continued till it was dawn. If my deed as you know was for to seek your pleasure then rescues us and make for us an opening from which we see the horizon according, Allah (S.W.T) made an opening from them till they saw the horizon. The other two also remembered their good deeds by which they made dua to Allah (S.W.T) in this difficult time and Allah (S.W.T) helped them and the huge rock was removed from the opening of the cave." (See Sahih Al-Bukhari & Sahih Al-Muslim)

It has become very easy for us to understand that doing good for our parents and being obedient sons and daughters to them, we can become good servants to Allah (S.W.T). The huge rocks of difficulties will be removed from our ways if we can prove to be the helpful and beneficial to our fellow human beings.

ROLE OF MOTHERS - IN UPBRINGING OF THE SOCIETY

Mother is the first and most important teacher of every human being in every society. If the mother plays her role and is dutiful to Allah (S.W.T) concerning her child in the light of Islamic teachings then the children adopt the way of Jannah (paradise), which is the way towards peace and tranquillity of our life in this world and in the world here after.

Abu Umamah reported that a man asked: "Ya RasulAllah (O messenger of Allah!) (S.A.W) what are the rights of parents over their children?" He (S.A.W) replied: " They (mum and dad) are your paradise and your hell" (Ibn Maja)

DOES YOUR MOTHER LEAD YOU TO PARADISE OR HELL?

If a mother teaches her children the love, respect, obedience, and kindness to their father, she is leading them to paradise and if she creates hatred, disobedience of the father in the children's heart then she is definitely leading the children towards hell. Doesn't she know that it is her duty to protect her children from the fire of hell and enable them to be blessed with paradise?

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE PASSED AWAY?

The answer is there in the Hadith reported by Abu Osaid Ibn Assaaidi who said that we were near the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) when a man of Banu Salma came to Him (S.A.W) and asked: "Ya RasulAllah (S.A.W) , Is there any obedience to parents left that I can show to them after their demise?" He (S.A.W) said: " YES! (You can be obedient to them) by praying for them, to seek forgiveness for them by fulfilling their instructions after their death, by keeping affinity to those who are not connected with you but through them and to honour their friends" (Abu Dawud and Ibn Maja)

GOOD PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Sayyiduna Saad (may Allah (S.W.T) be pleased with him) came to the beloved
Prophet (S.A.W) and mentioned that his mother has died suddenly and she could not instruct her son for anything to be done after her death, what should he do to be good to her now? The Prophet of Allah (S.W.T) instructed the companion to give water in charity.

May Allah
(S.W.T) grant us all the knowledge to understand Islam and its principals and the taufeeq to be well mannered towards our parents and all parents (Insha Allah).

Please Allah accept out Zikr today and grant us your blessings and mercy.

If I have made any mistakes or please Allah
(S.W.T) forgive me.

Ameen.

Prehistoric Paintings At Least 40 000 years Old That Depict Animals Found In Sulawesi

Cave paintings rewrite history of art

Comment on this story
iol scitech oct 9 Earliest Cave Drawings AP This undated handout photo provided by Nature Magazine shows stencils of hands in a cave in Indonesia.
Washington - Prehistoric paintings at least 40 000 years old that depict animals - including one known as a “pig-deer” - and the outline of human hands in seven caves on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are rewriting the history of art.
Scientists said on Wednesday they used a highly precise method to determine the antiquity of the paintings. They found the artwork was comparable in age to the oldest-known rock art from Europe, long thought to be the cradle of the early human cultural achievement embodied by cave painting.
“It was previously thought that Western Europe was the centrepiece of a symbolic explosion in early human artistic activity such as cave painting and other forms of image-making, including figurative art, around 40 000 years ago,” said dating expert Maxime Aubert of Australia's Griffith University.
The fact that people in Sulawesi were doing the same things as contemporaries in Europe indicates cave art may have emerged independently at about the same time around the world, including Europe and Southeast Asia, added archeologist Thomas Sutikna of Australia's University of Wollongong.
“Rock art is one of the indicators of an abstract mind of the past human, the onset of what we might consider to be one of the hallmarks of 'modern' humans,” Sutikna added.
The study focused on 14 cave paintings: 12 human hand stencils and two naturalistic animal depictions, one showing an animal called a babirusa, or “pig-deer,” and the other showing what probably is a pig.
They were painted in limestone caves near Maros in southern Sulawesi, a large island east of Borneo.
Most of the artwork was created with a pigment called red ochre to produce red- and mulberry-coloured paintings. The art's existence had been known for decades, but its age had never been determined. Some experts estimated it was maybe 10,000 years old.
The scientists used a method based on the radioactive decay of tiny quantities of uranium in small mineral growths dubbed “cave popcorn” that formed on some of the paintings.
The oldest Sulawesian artwork, a hand outline at least about 40 000 years ago, was comparable in age to the world's oldest-known rock art image, a red dot from Spain's El Castillo site.
The ages for the animal paintings at the famed Chauvet and Lascaux cave sites in France are more recent - between about 26 000 and 18 000 years old - than Sulawesi's figurative animals, which are at least 35 000 years old. The babirusa image represents the oldest-known, reliably dated figurative depiction, Aubert said.
The artists made hand images by blowing or spraying paint around hands pressed against rock surfaces.
“Archaeologists love to say things like 'ability X is what makes us human,' but in the case of the origins of art they are probably right. Our species is compelled to make art. And in one form or another, it is inherent in almost everything we do,” said archaeologist Adam Brumm, also of Griffith University.
The study appears in the journal Nature. - Reuters
