No contradiction between the Ahaadeeth of fasting ‘Aashooraa’ |
Fatwa Date : Thul-Hijjah 28, 1430 / 15-12-2009 |
Question
There
are some Hadeeths narrated that mention the reasons for fasting on
‘Aashooraa’ and they are apparently contradictory. Some narrations, for
instance, signify that Muslims observed fasting on this day in Makkah
before Hijrah and that the Quraysh used to also fast on it. They also
used to garment the Ka‘bah on this day, as narrated by Al-Bukhaari and
others. There are other Hadeeths which signify that fasting on this day
was ordained after Hijrah when the Prophet , found the Jews venerating this day on which Allaah saved Moosa (Moses) from Pharaoh. How can we reconcile between the versions?
Answer
All
perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds. I testify that
there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, , is His Slave and Messenger.
It was narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas “The Prophet , arrived in Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’ (10th of Muharram). He ,
asked them about this. They replied, ‘This is a good day; the day on
which Allaah rescued the children of Israel from their enemy. So, Moosa
fasted this day.’ The Prophet , said: ‘I have more claim over Moosa than you.’ So, the Prophet , fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast on it too.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
It was narrated on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah that she said, "Quraysh would fast on the day of ‘Aashooraa’ in the pre-Islamic period, and the Messenger of Allaah , too, would fast on that day. When he migrated to Madeenah, he , fasted on that day and ordered Muslims to fast on it too." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
There is no contradiction between this Hadeeth
and the previous one, and the reason is that the Jews' saying did not
create a new ruling, but it was rather simply just a description of the
state of affairs and an answer to a question.
Ibn Hajar said,
The
Hadeeth does not contradict the Hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah since it is
possible that both the Jews and the Quraysh used to fast on it at the
same time for different reasons. Al-Qurtubi
said, "Perhaps Quraysh fasted on this day based on following a previous
divine law, such as that which was revealed to Ibraaheem (Abraham) . The fasting of the Prophet ,
might have been by virtue of him agreeing with them as happened in
Hajj, or because Allaah The Almighty permitted him to fast on it as a
good deed. Later, when he migrated, he found the Jews fasting on it and
asked them why they were fasting on it. So, the fact that he fasted on
it and ordered Muslims to fast on it too might have been done in order
to attract the hearts of the Jews just as he did by facing their Qiblah
during prayer in the beginning. In any case, the Prophet , did not fast on ‘Aashooraa’ to imitate them; rather, he used to fast on it before knowing that they did so.
Allaah Knows best.

The Day of Ashura
Fatwa No : 81899 |
The Day of Ashura |
Fatwa Date : Muharram 1, 1422 / 25-3-2001 |
Question
Teach me about Ashura in detail?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds;
and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his
Family and Companions.
'Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. On
this day Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)
fasted in Makkah with Quraish. When He migrated to àl-Madinah, he found
the Jews fasting on this day. He continued fasting on that day and
ordered the Muslims to fast too. Afterward Allah legislated the fasting
during the Month of Ramadan. Then, the fast of 'Ashura became a
supererogatory fast. But it is likable for a Muslim to fast on this day.
If one fasts on this day, it is better to fast the 9th of Muharram also
to oppose the Jews.
The pieces of evidence for this point are as follow:
1 - Imam al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from 'Aisha ()
that she said: "The tribe of Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura
in the pre-Islamic period, and Allah's Apostle too, used to fast on
that day. When he came to al-Madinah, he fasted on that day and ordered
others to fast too. Later, when fasting of the Month of Ramadah was
prescribed, he (the Prophet) said: "Whoever wishes may fast -'Ashura-
and whoever wishes may leave it" .
2 - Ibn Abbas related : When the
Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to
Madinah, he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th
of Muharram). They used to say: 'This is a great day on which Allah
saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharoah. Moses observed the fast on
that day as a sign of gratitude to Allah. The Prophet Muhammad
(Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "I am closer to Moses
than them". So, he observed the fast (on this day) and ordered the
Muslim to fast on it". [al-Bukhari and Muslim].
3 - It is reported in
Sahihain (Bukhari and Muslim) from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: "I never saw
the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) seeking
to fast on a day more (preferable to him) than this day, (the day of
'Ashura) or this month, i.e. the month of Ramadan.
Imam al-Tirmizi
narrated from Abu Qatadah that the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace
of Allah be upon him) said: "I hope from Allah that the fast on the day
of 'Ashura atones for the sins of the preceding year."
Imam Ahmad narrated that "it atones the sins of two years, past and subsequent year".
4
- Imam Muslim narrated from Ibn Abbas, he said: "When the Messenger of
Allah (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) fasted on the day of
Ashura and commanded that it should be observed as a fast, they (his
Companions) said to him: Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews
and Christians hold in high esteem. Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah
(peace be upon him) said: When the next year comes, God willing, we
would observe fast on the 9th . But the Messenger of Allah (Blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) died before the advent of the next
year".
This is the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (Blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) regarding to 'Ashura. His Companions and
their followers went on this way. They have not distinguished this day
by any practice except fasting.
But many acts done by some
ignorant Muslims which "deform the face of Islam" have no evidence from
Qur'an and Hadith. These acts include celebrating on this day, slapping
one's face, tearing of one's clothes, using swords and blood-shedding.
None of these acts have any authentic relevance to 'Ashura, but are
among the innovations and bad deeds. The enemies of Islam use them to
misrepresent Islam .
Allah knows best.

What is the ruling on fasting the Day of 'Ashura'?
Answer:
When the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalaihi-wasallam) arrived in
Al-Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on the tenth day of Muharram. He said,
''I am more entitled to follow Musa (Peace be upon him) than
you.'' Reported Al-Bukhari in the Book of Fasting)
In the Hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allaah be please with him,
whose authenticity is agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim it is stated that
the Prophet (sallallaahu ýalaihi-wasallam) fasted on the Day of Ashuraý and he
ordered that the fast be performed on it, and when he was asked about the
virtue of fasting on it, he Prophet (sallallaahu ýalaihi-wasallam) said,
''I anticipate that Allaah will wipe out the sins of the
year before it, and the year after it'' (Reported By Muslim in the Book of
Fasting)
However, after that, he commanded that the Muslims should be
different from the Jews by fasting the tenth and the day before it, which is
the ninth or the day after it, which is the eleventh.
Based upon this, it is preferable to fast on the tenth and
to add a day before it or a day after it. Adding the ninth day to it is better
than the eleventh.
So, my Muslim brother, it is desirable that you should fast
on the Day of 'Ashura' and likewise on the ninth.

Fatawa: Significance of Fasting the Day of `Ashura'
Wa`alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear sister, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His Sake. May Allah reward you abundantly for your interest in knowing the teachings of your religion, Islam!
As a matter of fact, the true Muslim always takes the advantage of the blessed occasions and days of Islam. He spares no efforts in drawing himself nearer to Allah. In doing so, he concerns himself with knowing the virtuous days and occasions in Islam so as to follow his Prophet's suit in all spheres of life.
Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Ashura', and this month, meaning Ramadan.” (Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1867) In another hadith we are told that fasting the day of `Ashura' expiates the sins of the previous year as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of `Ashura' (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year” (Muslim).
Focusing more on the question in point, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:
Fasting the Day of `Ashura' is not to mourn the martyrdom of imam Husain (may Allah be pleased with him). We deeply respect Imam Husain’s martyrdom, we honor his glorious act of sacrifice for the sake of Islam. He gave us a great example of truth, courage and piety. But we also feel pain and grief in our hearts for his assassination at the hand of some hypocrites who took Islam as a pretext to commit their crime.
They fought and killed Allah’s Messenger’s beloved and blessed grandson and his family. This was the most heinous and shameful crime that was committed for the sake of political power. This tragic event took place in the year 61 AH or 680 CE. However, the tradition of `Ashura' fasting is very ancient and it goes back to a long time before imam Husian.
It is reported in the Sahih of Imam Al-Bukhari and other authentic collections of hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram while they were in Makkah (before the hijrah).
It was a day on which people of Makkah used to change the covering (kiswah) of the Ka`bah. Quraysh also used to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1489 and 1760)
After the hijrah when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We have more claim to Musa than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865)
In another report it is mentioned that Jews of Madinah used to hold a feast on this day. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told his Companions to fast instead. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1866)
`Ashura' fasting was obligatory (fard) in the beginning. In the second year of hijrah (624 CE) when Allah’s command came that Muslims should fast the whole month of Ramadan, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then sent someone to announce to people that fasting of `Ashura' had become voluntary (nafl). This indicates that whosoever wishes to fast, may fast and whosoever does not want to fast, there will be no blame on him/her.
Imam at-Tirmidhi mentioned that ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that we should fast on two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram to distinguish ourselves from the Jewish community. (At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 686)
Ibn `Abbas also quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” (Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, hadith 2002)
There is a great reward in fasting the day of `Ashura'. There are many hadiths that mention its blessings and virtues. It is good to fast on this day, although it is not obligatory.

- Double-tap or double-click setup.exe from the installation media, and then follow the steps.
Important
-
- The easiest way to convert an ISO file to a DVD is to use Windows Disc Image Burner.
- Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That's why we recommend that you don't install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.
- If you want to stop using Windows Technical Preview and return to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall your previous version from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC—typically a DVD. If you don't have recovery media, you might be able to create recovery media from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. You'll need to do this before you upgrade. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer's website for more info.
- After you install Windows Technical Preview, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.
